Dear Diary,
Prior to my visits at Baton Rouge General, staff goes around early on pet therapy visit days and asks who is interested in a visit from the therapy dogs. They place a sign on the outside of the room so that we know who has expressed interest in our visit. I’d say 80% of the patients want a visit so the dog teams are very busy.
On this particular night, I was the only small dog, so I worked overtime for the patients would like a bed buddy.

This sweet woman was not having a great day. But, she had the sign on her door so mom went inside the room.
My mom introduces us and asked if she would like to pet me but the woman replies something like “I would love to, I just don’t have the strength”.
Mom offers to place me beside her on the bed while the two of them just talk. She could pet me if she changed her mind.
I sensed she needed me so I went in for a snuggle. She began petting my ears, and do you know what?

She found the strength to pet me. And not only that, she said to me:
“You have been the best part of a really hard day”.
And that made me feel really good about the therapy I provide. I’m also grateful I have long, soft, magic ears.
